Miacomet is Nantucket Island’s only public year-round 18-hole golf course and is located in the rolling hummocks southwest of the town of Nantucket. The course offers breathtaking views and challenging golf shots. On calm days Miacomet will bring a smile to golfers of any skill level, and on windy days it is a true challenge even to the most experienced players. Miacomet was originally a nine-hole course until a new nine, designed by Howard Maurer, was added in 2003.
Today’s Miacomet combines the old and new. You start out on the old Nos. 1 and 2 near the clubhouse and then cross through the parking lot to No. 3, which begins a run of new holes, returning to the old on return to the clubhouse.
Among the noticeable differences are the green sizes. The old course averaged 3,000 square feet, and the new is about double that.
The second hole has a wide, flat fairway that seems innocuous until you reach the berm that runs across the front of the flat green. The short second pitch will require great skill to keep the ball on the green. This is an original and fun hole.
The third hole is the first of the new nine holes one encounters, and a beauty it is. A long 213-yard par-3 that is as difficult as it is beautiful. Bogey is easy to make here. The hardest hole on the front nine could easily be the 233-yard par-3 eighth hole. There is no escape from any shot short or left.
The fourteenth hole is a very challenging 495-yard par-five because of the many shot options available for your second shot. Try for the green, and a valley left filled with high grass and water awaits the miss-hit shot. Laying-up makes club selection a premium.
Your round ends on one of the original holes, a 492-yard par five with a narrow fairway and out-of-bounds on the right. The green is small and guarded by a bunker left and trees right. A good finish to a unique golf course.
