Getting to this course in Wellfleet, a town famed for its abundant and succulent oysters, is half the fun. The approach to this nine-holer winds from Route 6 down to Wellfleet Harbor and up through Chequessett Neck, a route lined with quintessential Cape Cod vistas, bobbing boats and historic homes. Attesting to its unique location, Chequessett is also popular wedding site, its beach just steps across the street from the clubhouse entrance.
And finding your Wellfleet oyster may be just as simple as playing a round
on this course of numerous water hazards and small undulating greens. The course uses separate tees to accommodate eighteen holes of play, and it has never been in better shape.
What Chequessett has over most short courses is the opportunity to hit the driver. Despite elevated greens, the third hole is a challenge to reach in two, and the No. 4 is a near impossibility. The sixth hole, on the other hand, can be reached on days when your swing is sweet and the wind is a your back.
What is especially fun about playing this course are its angles. Here you can readily understand what they mean on television when they talk about “shaping shots” to suit the course. If you don’t play to the right flats, this course can bite you.
If it is relaxing, low-key round of golf you are looking for, somewhere between a par three and a championship course, Chequessett is the place. After your round, indulge in lunch/dinner and your favorite beverage on the deck overlooking the ninth green. From this vantage point you watch players tense as they try to navigate the tricky putting surface.
